EMR Systems
When it comes to the latest gadget or technology, just because you're a physician doesn't mean that you have an open wallet. However, that's what a lot of companies think. They think that just because you're a doctor that you make a ton of money, and are willing to spend buckets on an EMR system. Software programs suddenly cost $10,000, $20,000, $30,000 or more. The hardware, a.k.a. computers, cost well over $1,000 to $2,000 a work station. Then of course, there's the never-ending fees for upgrades, maintenance, add-ons, and the most dreaded expense of all - tech support!!!
So, how do you choose what's best for you? How do you pick an EMR system that you can afford from the initial investment, installation, operation, upgrades, and support? Hopefully, a frank discussion on this subject will help.
Buying an EMR
When considering an EMR, you should forward think your needs. The software should be able to evolve with both your changing needs and the demands of your field. The hardware should be the most modern you can afford. Can you live with desktops? Or would you prefer laptops? Or would you rather wait for a few months for that new tablet that's coming out? How much will I be charged for upgrades? Will my EMR vendor keep pace with changing standards?
At a minimum, your EMR system should lighten or eliminate paperwork, reduce your time but improve efficiency at creating notes for patient charts, be able to access the software systems in use at labs, pharmacies, your hospital, etc. In other words, you should be able to improve your practice and life by using EMR, while dramatically improving patient care. A system that does all this pays for itself, because better patient care means improved revenue.
A new era of hardware is upon us. We're all familiar with desktops. I'm writing this on a desktop. But I prefer a laptop, and an ultra-light one at that. When a certain computer manufacturer (whose logo is a piece of fruit) releases their pad, I'll have one because it promises a new EMR function. Go to any local electronics retailer. Try an ultralight laptop. Then, go over and try an eReader (there or at a major bookstore chain). That eReader is a good example of the new generation of notepad computers, but the new ones will be in brilliant color. With a laptop or notepad, you can sit with your patient in a private setting and show them their MRI, X-Ray, CAT scan, EKG, and explain what's going on and why you're recommending their treatment plan. Or you can sit in the exam room at a desktop, and explain to them in pictures what words can't describe. From my own firsthand experience, it's incredible.
Amazing Charts - Our EMR System of Choice
Our company philosophy is to offer the best possible medical billing and practice management services at the most reasonable cost, saving our clients money, while offering the best possible client service, and making a sensible profit for ourselves. That's why our rates haven't changed in 12 years.
So, we wanted to find an EMR Company that shared our philosophy. Reasonable price, great service, inexpensive upgrades, customizable, and with low-cost maintenance fees.
Founded in 2001, AmazingCharts.com, Inc. was started by Jonathan Bertman, MD, FAAFP, a practicing family physician who tried many other products that served only to frustrate and slow down office flow. Wanting just one easy-to-learn program to manage his entire medical practice - from scheduling to intraoffice messaging to charting, and even to deal with his practice's billing - and wanting it for free (or at least a very low price), he researched dozens of products. Finding none that came even close to his requirements, he had the software designed and engineered from the ground up. Amazing Charts is that product.
Today, Amazing Charts is used by medical practices all across the United States. It meets all of the criteria any practice could have for an effective EMR System. However, don't take our word for it.
